MEDIEVAL TILE PAINTING: MYTH, MOTIF + MAGICK

Paint your very own tile to contribute to a collective artwork that’ll be displayed at the Makers’ Quarter for years to come!

You’ll work directly onto a ceramic tile using colour, pattern, and simple imagery, all inspired by the magic of medieval art and storytelling.

Paint onto pre-made, bisque-fired tiles – build up your design with ceramic colours and oxide-style marks, taking inspiration from magical medieval motifs like mythical creatures, heraldic symbols, foliage, borders and repeating patterns.

Start with a loose idea or respond to references laid out in books and artworks provided by your ceramicist facilitator, Charlie – use bold graphic shapes, echoing the look of old architectural tiles and illustrated manuscripts, or more organic motifs inspired by flora and fauna… Then layer colour from a medieval-inspired colour pallet, adding line and pattern until your tile feels complete.

This is a relaxed painting session with no prior experience needed, and no pressure to get it “right”. And, ultimately, you’ll be encouraged to create whatever you feel like creating.
