Sharing Stories with the Sun: Exploring Cyanotype Photography

Join us for a relaxed and creative workshop where you and you can discover the magic of cyanotype, one of the earliest photographic printing processes. Together, we'll explore how sunlight, shadows and everyday objects can be transformed into beautiful blue-and-white prints.

In this hands-on session, you'll create your own unique cyanotype artworks using natural materials, found objects and specially prepared light-sensitive paper. Children and adults can experiment with arranging shapes, leaves, flowers and textures to make striking images that appear as if by magic using only the rays from the sun!

Along the way, you'll learn about the fascinating history of cyanotype photography and discover how artists continue to use this process today. The workshop encourages curiosity, play and creativity, offering a chance to slow down, explore together and leave with a collection of handmade prints to take home.

No experience is needed, and all materials will be provided. You're also welcome to bring small objects from your time at Wilderness – or even from home – to experiment with and use to turn into prints.

Matt David (they/them) is an artist working across photography, printmaking and mixed-media processes. Their practice explores themes of memory, identity, queer histories and place, often using historic photographic techniques such as cyanotype to create layered and experimental artworks.

Alongside their artistic practice, Matt regularly facilitates creative workshops for people of all ages, creating welcoming spaces where participants can experiment, learn new skills and build confidence through making. Their workshops focus on accessibility, curiosity and creative play, encouraging people to discover unexpected possibilities within artistic processes.
